Getting over your fear of the gym

You need to consider what your motivations are. Why are you going to the gym? what do you want to achieve? Some people join for silly reasons like an authority figure told me to or its a popular thing to do.

These can motivate some people but in my opinion they’re the wrong reasons to go to the gym. Now if you’re scared of the gym we need to address why. IF it is the above, then this means you’re only going because that’s what you think people expect of you.

If you really want to get over your gym fear your motivations need to come from within. You need to have a clear understanding of what you really want and what will happen if you get yourself in a gym.

Some people have fears like being scared of being made fun of not lifting enough weight. Some people are worried about not being able to do the exercises right etc. We need to realise that not everyone in the gym is watching us.

Here are some ways that might help you.

1. Take a group class.

Take a group class, it won’t take you long to realise everyone is different ages and sizes. You’ll probably discover you’re not the worse one there either. There is safety in numbers, take a less intense group class to ease you in.

2. Dress right

You don’t need to wait until you’re ripped or skinny before you buy yourself nice workout clothes. Get yourself some comfortable clothes that look good! restrictive clothing sometimes make you feel self conscious too so try avoid that.

3. Sit at the back, workout in the corner.

Claim a bike in the back row, find your own little space to do ab workouts or workout in the darkest corner of the gym. Go early and sort your own space out too and you might feel more comfortable.

4. Go to the gym during off-hours.

You don’t need to go at peak times like 5-7 pm, why not go early in the afternoon or late at night when its less crowded?

Hopefully these tips will help you!
